Dear Students and Parents, As-Salaam-o-Alaikum (ASA):
The Kalamazoo Islamic School (KIS) welcomes you to the 2015-16 school year. We are looking forward to assisting you with Islamic education and exciting competitions. The details of our school activities and programs are briefly mentioned in this letter.
The regular school starts promptly at 11:00AM and end at 2:15PM after the Zuhar prayers. The Arabic Language Classes are offered from 10:00am to 10:50am. The school timings are fixed for the entire school year, and no adjustments are made for daylight savings time. Parents are responsible for on-time bringing and picking-up their children to/from the school. Furthermore, Parents are also responsible for monitoring their children before and after school hours. Zuhar prayers are part of the curriculum and students must pray Zuhar with the Jamaa. Early arrival is encouraged to pray Tahiyat-al-Masjid upon entering the Masjid, and Duha prayers (before
Students are required to wear full sleeve shirts, pants, full length skirts, or traditional dresses. Shorts, sleeveless shirts, shirts with pictures of any living creatures, tight clothes, or short skirts are not allowed. Girls should wear hijab or cover their heads.
Homework/Assignments/Tests and School Bag/Backpack
When a student is absent, it is his/her or their parents’ responsibility to contact a classmate or the teacher to collect and complete the homework/assignment, or prepare for a test. All students should carry a school bag or backpack for their books, notepads, homework, and other belongings. It is also easier for parents to check bags of younger students to know what the teachers may have sent home as homework or school related information.
If a parent would like to discuss any issues/concerns with their child’s teacher, please first contact the principal, or his assistant. Please do not directly contact the teacher. Teachers are instructed not to discuss any matter with parents. The Principal, or his assistant, will set up a time with the parent and discuss the issue. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Insha-Allah (iA), we will continue to serve snacks to the students during regular school session. Please inform us if your child has any food allergies or special needs. Please contact the principal, or his assistant, if you are interested in partially or fully sponsoring this program. The cost is ~ $300 per lunch serving.
Required Volunteer Time by Parents
KIS requires that each family provides a minimum of four (4) hours of voluntary services per school year to support KIS operations. The voluntary services may include assistance in teaching, cooking, cleaning, or other services as suggested by KIS.
Sponsor-a-Student and Donation Programs
KIS continues to offer Sponsor-a-Student Program. This program allows us to offset KIS expenses for economically distressed students. The cost is $150 per student. KIS also needs financial assistance from community members to supplement operational expenses. Please contact the principal, or his assistant, if you are interested in these programs.

KIS and its team of volunteers appreciate your commitment in providing Islamic education to your children. We have less than 90 hours of education in the entire school year. Therefore, the school plays a minor role in providing Islamic knowledge as most of the education will need to be provided by the parents and at your homes. We look forward to assisting you in this great cause and pray that may Allah (SWT) give us success, Ameen!
